Autonabit

The Mission

Autonabit is a New Zealand agritech company building small autonomous robots for vineyards and orchards. Their robots handle everyday tasks such as bird deterrence, mowing, and vine scanning-helping growers adopt automation incrementally without changing their layouts or practices. By introducing autonomy gradually, Autonabit is making advanced robotics practical and affordable for growers.

Vision Challenges

Navigating vineyards and orchards is far more complex than GPS waypoints alone. Robots must reliably detect unpredictable obstacles like ladders, buckets, and uneven terrain while working outdoors in dust, mud, rain, and bright sunlight. Previous sensor options-monocular cameras, basic LiDAR, or RealSense struggled with environmental robustness, stereo vision quality, and onboard intelligence, making reliable autonomous navigation difficult.

The Solution: Built with OAK

Autonabit integrates Luxonis OAK cameras as the “eyes and brain” of its robots. Starting with OAK‑D‑Lite for prototyping and moving to OAK‑D PoE Wide for commercial deployment, the company uses Luxonis cameras to deliver stereo depth, color imaging, and onboard AI detection in one package. Mounted on each robot, these cameras run custom object detection models directly on-device to recognize and avoid obstacles in real time while maintaining safe, autonomous operation.

The Solution: Built with OAK

Why Luxonis

Luxonis provided Autonabit with a rugged, IP-rated sensing platform that could survive outdoor conditions and still deliver high-quality depth and RGB data.

Key advantages included:

Onboard AI inference to run detection models without external compute.

Built-in IMU and stereo vision to simplify hardware architecture and reduce cost.

Wide FOV variants to cover more of the environment with fewer sensors.

Consistent API and SDK allowing easy migration from USB to PoE and fast prototyping to scale.

With Luxonis, Autonabit achieved a reliable, developer-friendly vision stack that meets the demands of real-world agriculture and can scale as their fleet grows.
